So I've decided to do another post for HIM.
A birthday present, a graduation gift, whatever the occasion may be. No need to despair! Men are usually much more practical about gifts. If it's something he'll use and something he can wear every day then you are on the right track!

Today I'm going to share with you many different ideas and uses and then you will see that this is not just a jar!

All over the web there are DIY projects and ideas using mason jars.

I have used mini mason jars to make Rosh Hashana Honey dishes with my students, as well as the larger mason jars to make Kosher Pickles with some teenagers.

However, to be honest these are my favorite jars. I picked up a few at my local discount store and I'm sure I will be back for more.

The moment, I saw these on the shelf I had an image of a big ribbon tied around the lid.

Just this week, somebody asked me about my blog, and if I enjoy blogging? The truth is, when I started, it was like a new hobby that I wasn't even certain would last. But after 6 months of blogging over 75 posts! and we just hit 5000 views!

I have to admit it's turning out to be so much more fun then I had expected.

The BEST gift idea I've heard yet?

The other day I was chatting with E, and she tells me that she must begin packing...
For what? I ask. So, then she tells me that her and her husband are going on vacation to Puerto Rico!
lucky you! I said that, thinking how lucky they were to get away from the freezing cold new york weather..

But then she told me how lucky they really were. Because this vacation was a surprise gift :)

You see her sister DL had come over to her house the other day and brought over a beautiful set of luggage! as a thank you gift. (you might remember when I posted about the world's lightest luggage)

But it gets better! DL insisted she open up the luggage and see what was inside... When she opened the smallest suitcase she found tickets for two to Puerto Rico.
Just when you think this can't get any better... It does! DL offered to babysit E's 4 children while they enjoy a real beach getaway!!!
All I kept thinking was WOW this has got to be the best gift ever!!! Luggage, vacation, and babysitter all included.

She finished off by telling me "Only sisters do that for each other" I couldn't agree more! and I did make sure that E had a little chat with my sister ;)

Maybe it's because we're big foodies?
Maybe it's because we're Jewish?
Maybe it's because we live in NYC and there are SO many awesome eateries?
Whatever the reason may be... Whenever we have something to celebrate, with family or friends we always end up going out to eat!

I'm not complaining! Clearly, it's the way to go!
We all gets dressed up (or not)
We all order way too much (or maybe that's just me)
We all eat, drink, laugh and enjoy!

Living in NYC we surely feel the shortage in parking spaces, but I guess we have something to make up for that! There are so many great restaurants, diners, and cafes...
If you live in the area or plan to make a trip I would recommend these as my favorite Kosher spots!

Noi Due is a tastefully designed Italian Cafe. It is located on the Upper West Side but the tastes and aromas will transport you to Italy!
Le Marais "a rare steakhouse... well done" A French Steakhouse (and one of my favorite restaurants)
Where every dish is prepared to perfection! And even their Pareve desserts hit the spot!
Sushi Metsuyan The best sushi I've ever tasted! but that's not all, they have a large menu of chinese dishes. A feast for your eyes, even before you take a bite you will be wowed by the presentation!
Basil Pizza & Wine Bar This is my favorite local place! I just love their basil fries, homemade pizza topped with goat cheese and delectable basil ice cream! They have tap beer and fine wines too!

Don't just take my word for it! Go out and try one of these places, and have a great time...

I already told you about my love for books here. I also shared with you how thrilled I was when we received my baby's first book as a gift!

Everyone knows how fast babies grow, and how much they change from day to day and week to week not to mention every month. And even though everyone told me to snap away because "they grow up so fast" I wish I had thought of this for my own baby.

If Mom&Dad use the camera to take 1 baby photo a week then by the time they're finish the first camera they will be able to see how much their baby has changed in his first 6 months! and then again at his first birthday.

An original idea for gifting flowers!

Personally, I think flowers are the perfect gift for so many occasions. Birthdays, Anniversaries, Engagements, Hospital gifts, hostess gifts, and the list goes on...

If you are not a big fan of floral arrangements, you can read some other ideas I posted here In lieu of flowers. While millions of New Yorkers and tourists are standing around Times Square waiting with hats and glasses and noisemakers to watch the ball drop and welcome the new year! (been there, done that!) I'm thankful to be home and warm and blogging with you!
Along with fireworks, New Years resolutions are what come to my mind this time of year.
Every year we vow to be better and stronger, to stick to our word, and persevere!
Most people have the same goals, to stick to their diet, to go to the gym, to break that bad habit!

Happy Holidays & Weekend Wrap-Up!

As you can imagine, the past few days have been super busy... We get very serious around here when it comes to celebrating! Chanukah is one of my favorite holidays - it's just so festive and fun! Hanging out with family and friends, all the parties, and gelt, gifts, games and treats... Not to mention all the donuts, and latkes (that are sooo good - in a really bad way!)

Last night was the 5th night of Chanukah! Which is always the night reserved for family party and extra gelt! On top of all that, this year we celebrated my nephew (and first grandson in the family) first birthday! We sang, and clapped, wore hats and ate cake :) we watched old home videos and laughed soo hard that it hurt!

We watched videos of us at school performances and family vacations. and lots and lots of birthdays! Parties at home and parties in school. My mom always made a big deal about parties and she was the queen at wrapping presents. One thing that always amazed me was how she could create something out of nothing. Meaning she would be able to take scraps of anything at hand and make it look good.

Way before it was cool, to reuse and recycle, my Mom would wrap gifts with tissue paper from here and a ribbon from there... It always looked beautiful and neat. I would watch her press down on the neat folds and hide the bits of tape.

Now with everyone being more conscious of wasting paper and all... there are so many who are ditching the expensive holiday wrap and opting for these more eco friendly choices.

If you are running out of gift wrap or just dont feel like spending extra on gift bags try some of these cool ideas all using old Newspapers or Maps or pages from the telephone books!

If you are feeling really creative, you can even add newspaper bows and roses.

Chanuka Gelt? or Chanuka Gifts?

Earlier today I was talking with Judy, my JNet study partner, and she asked me about Chanuka gifts...
Is it a Jewish tradition to give Chanuka presents? and did I receive Chanuka gifts when I was a kid?

I started off by telling her that in my family all the children would get Chanuka gelt.

The chocolate kind, and a few dollars each night! We would also get some money from our aunts, uncles and grandparents.

On one of the last days of Chanuka the entire family would take a trip to Toys R' Us in Manhattan where we could each choose a gift or two to buy with our Chanuka money. (Every year that I can remember, I chose an art / craft set that came with hundreds of beads or pearls... I am SO predictable!) After what felt like hours in the toy store and each child was happy with their toy, we went to watch the Lighting of the World's Largest Menorah by then, we were usually cranky and cold, so our long day ended with delicous hot pizza at Jerusalem II

Good times... good times!

Sneak Peak & Weekend Wrap Up #7

Can you believe it's already the weekend! This week really flew by, and I am so glad it did, for a few reasons. One of my good friends are coming to town, Chanuka is just a few days away, and a few close friends are getting together to celebrate a birthday!

I already got a head start on the wrapping! So far, it has been tons of fun! I decided to try a few different styles that I have found on Pinterest! (which btw is a super cool website, that leads you to even more cool blogs and sites)

Aside for my dining room table turning into one BIG mess... I'm really having a ball! It's bringing the holiday spirit into our home and it's got me thinking about my family members who are coming to join, and the parties, and fun ahead of us!

I already posted here about the whole kraft paper craze, and so, I was eager to use some of that.
As well, as my new obsession with yarn! At first I was excited to make some festive blue pom poms and then I couldn't stop... Wrapping with yarn is a whole art, the best part is that you can just play around with it and the options are endless!

Chanukah is just one week away! and I know I'm not the only one who still has some shopping to do.
As much as I try to stay organized, and start making my list in advance... There's always one (even a few) that get left for last. Maybe it's because you haven't found the right gift... or you completely forgot!

Here is a list I compiled (as requested by my friend Chani)

1. For Baby. Unless you've been living under a rock, I'm sure you've heard of Sophie the Giraffe. YES! she has a name. and you would too if you were the most popular teething baby toy on the market. But seriously, I've only heard rave reviews from my neighbor, friends, sisters in law ect ect. The other day when we were with one of my friends and my babes tried pulling this toy away from her son I decided it's time to buy one for my baby, and what better time then now! Now that it's on sale @amazon.com

2. For the Kids. Get Magnetiles! These cool magnetic tiles will entertain and fascinate all of your children. On the box it says for ages 3 and up. Let me tell you that I had these in my classroom and even I could not resist... Although they come 32 in a pack. I will give you the heads up that you are better off starting with the Value pack that comes with 100 peices. And also get the transparent tiles they are way cooler!

3. For the boys. you can check out my post of what I got my brothers last Chanukah....Boys will be boys!

4. For the Girly Girl! check out this sweet new album by Chanale. I got it for my sister, and she absolutely loves it. The other day she called to tell me she can't get the song out of her head :) Get it @ mostlymusic.com

5. For the Teachers/ Tutors/ Therapists. I posted a few gifts under $50 here

I will tell you that gift cards are still your safest bet. (from asking all my teacher friends...) If you want to make it more personal you can add a homemade card or craft from your child!

6. For your Hubby. It depends, what is he into? Think of what he likes... I have posted some ideas for the coffee lover, the wine lover. Does he have a sweet tooth? I think most guys would enjoy a new gadget or a new addition to one of their gadgets;)

7. For the Wifey the skies the limit! at least that's how I feel when I walk into my favorite department store. First there's the makeup and perfumes. The jewelry & watches. Hats, scarves, bags, and all the leather accessories. and that's only the first floor :) But let's not fool ourselves most women like the gadgets too and imho there's something for everyone at the apple store :)

8. For Bubby, or Grandma, or Nana... it's all the same. They want to see pictures of their grandchildren so they can look at and show their friends, and look at again! I know that we have gotten so used to email, and snapfish, and facebook ect. but my grandmother likes the plain old fashioned prints. So that she can carry them around in her purse. That's why I thought this would make a great gift for her. It's a photo album and a clutch all all in one. You can either fill all 20 pages of the album with photos of the whole mishpacha... or you can print a few of the most recent shots and let her fill up the rest. I happened to find these at a nearby discount store in gorgeous crocodile design for a price to good to post!

9. For your Coworker. Since you obviously spend lots of time together at the workplace, you probably know what they shop for online (jk) but you definitely have a better picture of what they would enjoy. Maybe they could use some fun and cheerful accessory to brighten up their desk or office space.
I just found these chalk vases and fell in love!

10. For the Cleaning Lady/ Super. Don't forget while you and your family are celebrating and busy gift giving there are some people you shall not forget. I learned this from my father, who tips the garbage collector every new years. Get a nice card, and insert some $$$. Cash is King! and they will truly appreciate the extra Moola!

An Unexpected Gift!

The other day I got an unexpected gift! It wasn't my birthday, or anniversary, it wasn't a holiday, it was just an ordinary day. I stopped by, at my parents house for a visit, and my father handed me a photo. He said, Look this is yours. I was expecting to see an old baby picture, or a camp picture, one of those photos that landed up in one of my siblings albums, but I was surprised to see a new picture I have never seen before.

(A man who has been selling these photos in Shul, recognized my father, and presented him a few of these old photos)

Almost, as if finding, and discovering a new memory from my childhood. This picture brought me back to a special time in my life. A sweet time. When I was lucky to go along with my father, to 770, to receive a dollar from the Rebbe! Along with that dollar we each got a moment to stand before the Rebbe, and receive a blessing.
Although, I was very young girl, and don't remember this particular visit. This photo is a real gift!
It is a gift that warms my heart and soul.
It is a gift that reminds me of my childhood, and of my Rebbe.

After, bringing it home, I realized this would make a great gift for my sister (who is also in the photo)
I brought the photo to be copied, and shopped for a simple frame. As soon as I get a chance I will find a pretty giftwrap and then it will be all ready for Chanukah!

WINNER & Weekend Wrap Up #6

Tis' the season... of many things! actually
In our family it's Birthday season and this week we celebrated two special birthdays!
Personally, I think every birthday is worthy of big celebration and cake ;)
But u know, there is a whole new level of excitement when we're celebrating someones 30th and 50th birthday.
No names, as to not disclose anyone's age over here...
BUT what I will assure you all, there was lots of drama and excitement in planning an entire family get together at a nice kosher steakhouse!
Sometimes deciding on a gift may be a challenge, but when it's a joint gift from over 15 people, that is always gonna be a challenge!
In the end, it's the thought that counts, and there's no better way to celebrate then with good company, and good food!

A surprise Birthday cake is timeless... 10, 30, 50 years, it don't matter!

Bittersweet News & More Gift Ideas!

I've got some good news and some bad news to share with y'all.

One of my favorite department stores are going out of business :(

Filene's basement has been one of my lucky spots in the city to shop and find outrageous deals.

I KNOW, not everybody can deal with looking and sorting through all the designer clothes, shoes, and accessories, but for me this place has been a real gold mine. My family jokes about the thrill I get from shopping in Filene's. It's more of a sport for me, kinda like a treasure hunt! I don't like to spend too much time on each floor, and I don't have the patience to sort through racks and racks. I've learned to maneuver through the store and go straight to the designer shoes or skip all the cheap jewelry and land a nice leather bag! In fact I've scored 5 pairs of shoes in 1 hour. That day I came home with 3 pairs for me Prada, Oscar de la renta, and (I can't remember the other) plus 2 pairs of Hugo Boss for the men.

But my proudest moment, was when I convinced my very doubtful sister to come shop with me there. She was looking for a dress to wear to a wedding. And I told her I was sure we would find one there. (I knew that I was totally risking it, especially since you never know what there will be at the store) But, it was totally worth the risk, when we landed a Vera Wang dress for her!

Now, I wasn't the crazy sister that likes to go treasure hunting in filene's, I was the sister that found her a dress! and saved the day :) LOL

So, When I heard that Filene's is going out of business, I knew there's gotta be a silver lining, AND THERE IS! The entire store is on sale! When I went this week they were up to 40% off.

And there are tons of gifts! for everyone on your list....

They've got clothes, toys, and books for Baby gifts!

When I saw these, I thought of all the handy (wo)men that deserve their own set of tools.

Well, that was many winters ago, and we were in a warmer climate. Weekend Wrap - Up #5

This week has been busy- and in a really good way!
One sister, and one brother had a birthday this week! So there were gifts, and cake, and parties goin' on.

My UPS guy has been super busy delivering lots of things to my place.

And by things, I mean, my hubby's surprise gift finally came!
As well as my shoe shape tape dispenser has arrived YAY!

I'm trying to stay organized and be prepared, therefor, I have already ordered some Chanuka gifts for those long distance relatives!
With the little pile of gifts growing on my coffee table - I have started to look around for more gift wrapping inspiration and so I'd like to share it with y'all.

Yarn, Yarn, Yarn, I love how it adds such a warm and fuzzy touch to the bare and earthy feel of the craft paper. The great thing about this is, that I can finally collect some cool colors of yarn!

Weekend Wrap - Up #4

Usually, the weekend wrap up would be posted on Friday or sometime near the weekend...
This weekend we actually went away to spend time with family, and I'm sorry to say that with Thanksgiving, Black Friday Shopping, and unseasonably warm weather I actually neglected my blog to shop, eat, and enjoy a stroll on the boardwalk!
No regrets, but I did miss you guys...
And with Thanksgiving behind us - Holiday Season is in full swing!

I hope y'all took advantage of the sales goin on all weekend. You don't have to run to the mall at midnight anymore to grab great deals - There were loads of sales online and not only on cyber monday!

When it comes to buying gifts for guys, I think it's safe to say every man living in our day and age would greatly appreciate a new accessory or a new gadget to add to his electronic toys!

If only it were that simple! right? I can tell you from experience shopping for electronics can actually be quite frustrating if you are like me and not so familiar with the jargon all these computer junkies use!

Therefore, I have come up with a few tips, for my lady friends, who are not as techie and computer savvy, but still want to buy the right gift.

#1 Be on the lookout, and keep your antennas up... When you see your husband checking out the electronic aisle at any store, make sure to get a glimpse of what brands, or models he's asking about.

#2 Speak to a close friend/ relative (male) of his, this is actually one of those things guys talk about with each other!

#3 Check out the gadgets and electronics he already has maybe there is a new accessory that has recently come out, he can add or connect to his current toy!

#4 Think outside the box, if he already has all the "essentials" maybe you can find a cool gadget he wouldn't necessarily buy on his own there are loads of websites thinkgeek.com or x-tremegeek.com or sharperimage.com just to name a few!

#5 Whatever gift you DO end up buying for him, make sure it can be returned/ exchanged in case it's not exactly the model/ type/ brand that he would have liked.

DIY Chanuka Gift Bags!

Kraft paper is all the rage these days! I really like that look for gift wrapping, especially during holiday season. It changes up the typical green/ red/ gold combo and the blue/ yellow/ gold look.

Last year I made these adorable Chanuka gift bags with my preschool age students. I love this project because it is so ridiculously simple that you can even have your kids make them with you.

What you'll need:
A pack of sponges (available at the dollar store)
A good pair of scissors
Brown Paper Bag of any size
Washable paints in the color of your choice
Ribbon in coordinating colors

First I cut the sponges into dreidel shapes and jewish stars.
Then I dipped the dreidels into dark blue paint
and the stars into white paint
I stamped the brown paper bag and left it to dry.
Once the paint was dried I curled the silver and blue ribbon and tied it to the handle of the bag and Voila!
This DIY project is simple and fun! It can be done for any occasion and I like using the sponges because your options are endless. You can cut big or small shapes or numbers. For example: You can cut the number 5 for a 5 year old's birthday gift...

Weekend Wrap-Up #3

As a kid I always loved to check the mailbox, and be the first to get the mail! I guess it was the excitement of receiving mail just like the adults. Whether it was a letter from my pen pal or just a postcard from the dentist reminding me to come in for a check up, I was thrilled to see any piece of mail with my name on it!

These days when I go to the mailbox I can already predict what will be there. Bills, Junk Mail (since I had my baby in May, the junk mail has quadrupled and I'm bombarded with all sorts of baby product advertisements) and then there's the charities!
Unfortunately, there are so many fundraisers, charities, and good causes to contribute to, that we can not possibly write out a check to every appeal that comes in the mail.

However, I must say that there is one cause that is really close to my heart! TEN YAD
Ten Yad, is hebrew for "lending a hand" What this organization does is way more then giving a helping hand. They are committed to helping out Brides in my community before their wedding day.

Every year, In November, they have their biggest fundraising event, it is a Chinese auction like no other. They have over 100 prizes and they are the latest, top of the line items. They auction off luxurious jewelry, cars, vacation trips, furniture, and the latest electronics!

Each year the decor and presentation is magnificent. Every year I say this year was the TOP! Yet, every year I am amazed how they manage to bring more class, more elegance, and more beauty to the event.
This year the prizes were displayed in a Showcase expo. Each Brand that was donating a prize got a special booth draped in beautiful curtains and adorned with magnificent flower arrangements.

This Sunday, I had a ladies night out, and a few friends of mine met at the Ten Yad Auction. We each bought tickets, hoping to win something from the Cruise Vacation to the Luxury Watches!
I can't tell you that I won any prize, or that my friend won either. But I can tell you that there is no greater gift then the GIFT OF GIVING!

And, this organization knows how to give.
They give with grace.

Get organized: Start your Holiday Gift List

I think, Now is a pretty good time to break out the lists!

Why? Because in about 1 month we will be deep in the holiday craziness! Going to the mall, to pick up a simple gift will become as stressful as running to the supermarket for groceries before a big snow storm! Packed parking lots, frantic shoppers, and an empty shelf of the latest toy trend will not be fun to deal with. Shopping online is also not recommended for last minute shopping... delayed shipping and seeing This item is currently out of stock are the most dreaded words to pop up on your screen.

So, here's what I found to be very helpful!
Make A List!
Besides for working very well with my (slightly OCD) brain! This is a great way to avoid last minute stress and also gives you the luxury to browse online and in stores for better prices. You will also be saving on extra charges for next day shipping.
It's really easy all you need to do is grab a pen, or pull out your phone and start your gift list. Write down all the family members, teachers, friends, and coworkers, you want to buy gifts for this year! Btw don't forget to include the super, or your cleaning lady. (I learned this from my father, who tips the garbage collecter every New Years)
Then you can sort through the list and decide which gifts you want to shop for first.
I like to start with my OOT (out of towners) that way I can shop, wrap, and ship the gifts in time!
Keep the list handy, in case you have to add more people; and take it with you to the stores, so you know what to scout out for....

Boys Will Be Boys!

Let me start off by saying that I grew up with a lot of boys around the house.
Five brothers, and their friends.
While my sister and I were busy playing with our dolls, and setting up a tea party, the boys were busy being boys! Playing cops n' robbers and lining up their army men...

So when I found these Marshallow shooters last year I bought the twin pack for my two brothers.

There's been lots of exciting things going on all week!

Finally meeting up with some girlfriends after weeks ok I'll be really honest with you- it's been months! I know... gasp
Finally seeing my baby's first tooth cut through - after some really tough nights!
and finally having some real fresh fall weather in NYC!

I've been sooo thrilled these past few days, to be able to get in a few long walks...
One of my destinations, was to barnes and nobles. I picked up a book for a friend of mine.

It's been a fun birthday week filled with celebrations. First a girls night out with some of my closest gal pals! Then a dinner date with my husband, and a birthday lunch with some family. Since I just celebrated my birthday I want to tell you about a book I received as a Bat- Mitzvah
present. It's called HaYom Yom, compiled by The Lubavticher Rebbe, with a daily thought of inspiration.

"In describing this work, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak wrote: ..."A book that is small in format"..."but bursting with pearls and diamonds of choicest quality" ..."A splendid palace of Chasidism." The edition I received is translated in Hebrew- English and is a smaller travel sized one.
Well, I've been enjoying this book since I was 12 and have brought it along with me on various trips and to different countries. Besides for being short and easy to read, I have to say that each year I see the same words but learn something new about the meaning and it's relevance to my life!

If you live in New York chances are you, just like me, may have never visited Dylan's Candy Bar. Located in NYC this Supersized Wonkaesque candy store is well known to the many TOURISTS who come visit! I heard about this place a while ago... and never realized that it was right across the street from Bloomingdale's!!!

One Sunday when my husband and I were shopping I took the opportunity to play "tourguide" and show him around the area. (I usually end up looking like the tourists since I have such a bad sense of direction :)

You can literally spend hours in the magnificent world of color and candy. Much of our time was spent "window shopping" since it is not a kosher candy store. However, we did get our hands on lots of Twizzlers, Mike N' Ikes, and all the other treats we were able to spot with a kosher symbol.

The stores owner Dylan Lauren (daughter of fashion designer Ralph Lauren) has designed the space into a dream like world for Candy lovers of all ages... I even got a little dizzy walking up the stairs that are transparent with loads of candy spill all over!

If there's one thing that you can be sure of, you will walk out of that place thinking "I WANT CANDY" and I am not especially one with a sweet tooth...

If you Do know a little girl or boy, or even an adult for that matter, who loves candy I would definitely recommend taking a trip here.

Birthday Weekend & Weather Forecast (yes they go together like birthday & cake)

As always, I like to check the weather forecasts for the weekend. It helps me answer so many questions! What to wear? Where to go? and in general How I would like to spend the weekend...

I could have told you three months ago that it would rain this Shabbos! Of course, I'm certain. It has rained EVERY Shabbos, Parshas Noach, since I was born! (Including the day I was born - every year as we watch the downpour, my parents remind me how they walked around the hospital in the pouring rain! waiting for my arrival.) So yes, friends living in the NY area, I can assure you that right now the weather people predict 90% chance of rain for Saturday, but if you really want to be prepared I'd say plan to stay indoors and if you must go out- wear some real good rainboots :)

My birthday memories include, yummy birthday cake, awesome parties with friends, and always giving out socks to all my party guests who would arrive soaking wet!

Here's to rainy days, and my awesome friends, who showed up to my parties year after year in the pouring rain!

My Aunt from Paris!

Some of you have met my aunt and know what I'm talking about... but for those of you who have not, I will try my best to describe her to you.

Let's just say that my aunt is one of the most generous people I know! She has been spoiling me since I was a little girl. And as a kid, I thought she was the richest person in the world (turns out she just has a heart of gold and loves to buy gifts for her family)

She's the aunt who sent me a HUGE package of goodies the first time I went to overnight camp!
She's the aunt that took me touring- and Shopping- all over France for a summer!

For my birthday she wanted to buy me perfume, since I am that type who has been wearing the same scent for the past 5 years I decided instead of asking her to get my usual. When choosing the right gift for a birthday, wedding, or anniversary we usually have enough time to think about what we would like to get, and even have time to shop around for the best place to buy it!

When it comes to Host/ Hostess gifts we usually don't have that luxury. For example, if we are invited out for Shabbos and it's been a busy week! Chances are I will only remember about getting a gift on Friday afternoon... that means I will be waiting on line at the Flower shop or Candy shop and at that point I won't necessarily be left with such fabulous options.
It's happened to me one too many times, and I feel bad spending top price on a lousy looking bouquet or a dreary chocolate platter.

Of course, there's always a bottle of wine, that can be a good fall back option.

But I've finally figured out a new way to keep the fun in gift giving and that also has me prepared!!!
Stock up!

Now let me explain, what I mean. When you go about your every day life, and shop on line, or in stores, you may come across some really good deals on dinnerware or serverware. That's when you have time to shop around for pretty and practical gifts. Something you would enjoy, and you think others would too.
For example, When I'm entertaining I like to make a lot of salads! and there is always a need for more salad servers. So, as I shop around for myself, I look for designs (and prices) that I like! When I come across a nice set of salad servers I usually buy more then one set. So that I can keep one for myself and the others make great hostess gifts.
They don't take up much place in my closet. They are gifts that won't go bad. I can keep them there until the next time we are invited out. Most times, these kind of salad servers come in pretty boxes so they don't even need to be wrapped. All I have to do is drop it in a gift bag and they are ready to go!

I've gotten a very cute set of oven mitts, and I found that to be a very thoughtful and practical gift- that will stay in my kitchen when all the chocolates are done and all the wine has been sipped away!

Birthday Gift For a "Girly Girl"

When I watched this video for Chana'le new Album I thought it was cute, fun, and super girly. Sounds like I'm describing my little sister Chanie. She's one of those girls that loves everything pink, and signs her name with a heart!

Apple.
The word alone has many different symbols and associations.
For me I think of my Apple computer right away. Second, I think of NYC the big apple!
There's also the famous apple on the teachers desk, and the poisonous apple from Snow White.
Basket of apples from apple picking, and very American apple pie....

However, this song, is probably the oldest memory I have of an apple.
At the start of every school year, beginning from nursery school, the first lesson we were taught was always about Rosh Hashana AND apples! We colored, we sang, and we learned all about apples. Of course, we had a chance to dip them in honey and taste them too!!

Are you a Collector?

I have had so many collections since I was a kid! First I had a major sticker collection, in fact, everyone I knew collected stickers. There were shiny, glittery, felt, and even scented stickers. I would organize my sticker album and bring it to school. When recess time came, we all whipped out our collections and started trading. On Sundays, when I had friends come over we would ask my mother for a few quarters so we could each buy a "square" of stickers from the local toy store. Oh my I remember the fights my sister and I had over which stickers were worth more. My Hello Kitty stickers or her Lisa Frank? (What did we even like about Lisa Frank that made it the coolest items to have?)

Then I started collecting stationary... When that got old, keychains was the new thing.
It was the craziest thing! Some girls would attach their entire collection of 50 keychains to their backpacks. When they came late to class EVERYONE was able to hear them walking down the hall because of all the jingling sounds of their keychains.
I can hardly remember all the other silly things we collected. They came and went like all trends that fade away.

But then came our 8th Grade Trip to Washington DC. And before we headed back on the buses to drive back home all 120 eighth graders HAD to stop at the gift shop. I remember looking at all the souvenirs and decided I wanted a shot glass for my collection. (I didn't have a shot glass collection yet, but I wanted to have one ;) and that's where it all started.

Now, 200 shot cups later and I have no place to keep these little cups that turned into a huge collection! They are stored up in some shoe boxes in my apartment, out of sight and out of mind!

Until this past week, when my cute little brother came back from camp and handed me a gift!

I laughed when I saw the crumpled paper bag because I immediately recognized the way the gift shops wrap up these little glasses. He told me "For your collection, Rochie" and handed me a glass from Amish Town! I thought it was sooo sweet of him.


This one my hubby got for me when we were engaged!

So now I revisited my
collection and added the latest addition. I remembered all the different times my friends came back from Vacation and brought me a shot glass. I have so many from places all around the world Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Chile, Florida, California, Mexico, England, France, Switzerland, Israel, Uruguay, Argentina...

It happens to be the easiest thing to buy gifts for a collector, because you can be at any airport, gift shop in the world and you will be able to find a mug, or a thimble for that aunt who has a collection :)
It may be the smallest gift for you to pack but it shows them you thought about them on your trip!

Back to School! You know what that means...

You know it's that time of year, when you start seeing all the stores hanging back to school signs! (or if your like my friend, she feels the back to school fever when the dates on the milk bottles say September)

The kids are back from camp, summer is nearly over, and that means its back to school! And for many adults that means back to work too!

It's never easy to go back to work/ school after summer vacation, but I can think of one old trick that always seems to help.

As a kid, I always loved shopping for new school supplies! New notebooks, cool designs, and crisp folders were a great distraction. Choosing great inky pens, and of course a new briefcase helped me with the new season transition.

As an adult I do the same thing, if it means going back to teach, or working at the office I always like something new to freshen up the workplace.
By adding a burst of color, a drop of fun, or a touch of personality getting that little something will make a whole lot of a difference.

First let me clarify, when I tell you that I had breakfast at Tiffany's the picture you may have of Audrey Hepburn dressed so elegantly with her coffee and croissant in hand standing in front of the window on 5th Avenue is not quite what I was referring to! Sometimes, Gift cards are the best way to go! I've been a camp counselor for many a summer, and as any teacher/ counselor knows the end of the year photo albums, and scented lotions can really start piling up. I'm not saying that these gifts weren't appreciated but being on the receiving end I can tell you that these gifts are a hit or miss!

Make your own Greeting Cards!

I originally took this photo to make "Mother's Day" cards with my preschoolers. I chose to do this during outdoor play so that I can easily take one child aside while letting the others play. The kids had fun dressing up in the accessories I had brought. Then came the rose! (I would suggest having more then one rose in case you need backup...) All I needed was a few shots of each child and then they were able to go back and play.

Once you have the photos, you can easily make them black and white... I used Photoshop but you can do this on any program you're comfortable with. Then I used the color selection tool to make the rose stand out. There are so many variations that you can play around with. Since this was a preschool activity I kept it simple. You can add some text and match up the color. If you have a photo printer at home you can print it right away! Or you can order a bunch on shutterfly.com or snapfish.com This can be used for many occasions, and for many different people. Parents, Siblings, Friends... Besides for being so adorable these cards are more unique than any greeting cards you would buy in the store!

The World's Lightest Luggage!

Every time we travel, the packing is a huge ordeal! What to pack? What to leave behind? Will my suitcase be overweight? The one thing I don't fret over is which luggage I will take. Ever since I got my first set of Heys Luggage (5 years ago) I have been flying in style! This 3 piece set was the most practical gift ever. Firstly, it comes in the coolest colors and prints - so it's easy to spot yours, and you don't need to keep picking up every black suitcase that resembles yours. Did I mention that it is the world's Lightest Luggage! The wheels, the hard case... I can go on and on. The Girl with the Superman Umbrella!

So how did I become the girl with the superman umbrella? It was on a rainy day similar to today's downpour, and I was stuck in NYC. Never mind, that I was wearing a new pair of shoes and I had just gotten my hair done. I was desperate to buy myself an umbrella! So I payed the few bucks and bought an umbrella off a guy standing with his wagon full of umbrellas. I didn't notice the superman logo displayed on the 2 sides of the umbrella until I was back at home,and at that point I wast too soaked and drenched to care.

A few months later... and it's raining again! My husband is rushing to leave to work and he's searching for an umbrella. Yes, we had a few in the closet but my sister needed one and a friend took the other... now there's only one black one left. As he opens it up he sees it's a Superman umbrella. I urge him to take it anyway, Who cares? Apparently, he does and he decides to go brave the rain. I decide to shop for umbrellas :)

Bite Size Surprises!

When it comes to giving gifts, "It's the thought that counts." Yet, sometimes, it may be very difficult to think of a thoughtful present. Especially, if you're like me and tend to procrastinate about such things until the last minute.

This is a good idea, if you want to give a thoughtful gift to a family member!

What you'll need:

1. A bag of their favorite candy or chocolate.

2. Post -It notes

3. Sharpie

4. Curling ribbon

5. A small gift bag.

Because I was preparing this gift for my mother, and wanted to get the whole family involved, I sent out an email to the siblings who were away and spoke to the kids who were at home. They each had to come up with 2 or 3 messages that they wanted to send to my mom for her birthday. The responses came back quickly and they were soo cute. Some were sweet, but most of them were very humorous! I wrote down each message on a separate post- it note and made sure to write who said it. Then I wrapped each chocolate individually with the post it note and tied a ribbon around it. Each little chocolate looked like a mini gift. After they were all wrapped up, I piled them inside a pretty gift bag. We gave the gift to my mom and she kept the bag in her car. With each bite sized treat she opened she got to read a personal message from one of her children!

This is a great personal gift, that requires minimal preparation! You can use this general idea and change it up depending on the person, and the occasion.... Have fun with it!

The perfect Thank-You gift!

It can be very difficult to find a gift that says Thank you. Especially when you are trying to express so much gratitude.
After giving birth, and moving into my mother's house for a nice stretch of time I felt like there was no gift in the world that would be able to express my gratitude. After thinking of so many different ideas that were big and huge and expensive... I realized that would just not work. Not for my parents at least, my mother would say "Why did you spend so much, save your money..." "Buy something for the baby..."

So then we began to think of something that would be thoughtful and cute. Something smaller, as a token of our appreciation. We wanted to say "thank you" from us and our baby, to the new Bubby and Zaidy. And then we found the perfect gift!
We ordered this simple kit from Amazon. Clay Handprint & Footprint Keepsake Photo Wall Frame - Black. The instructions were clear and in no time I had an adorable handprint and footprint of my baby. We added a photo in the middle and it was good to go!
Ofcourse, I wouldn't give up my favorite part;) I wrapped the box in a lovely lavender and added a whimsical white bow, and placed it in a deep purple gift bag. Now it was good to go!

The process was fun, The price just right, and the parents were ecstatic.

In lieu of flowers...

Personally, I love flowers! Orchids, Peonies, Hydrangeas, Roses, Gerber daisies, Calla lilies... They're all so beautiful! (Especially the other unique and exotic flowers, that I don't know their names.) Flowers add add an instant burst of life and color, not to mention a fresh and floral scent.

When I receive any bouquet or flower arrangement on Friday afternoon, I am delighted! Most times, I will place the flowers as a centerpiece for our Shabbos table, or if we are having guests I prefer to have more place at the table and so the flowers will add decor near our couches.

Not all women enjoy flowers as much. Some women would appreciate a different gesture, something thoughtful that won't wither and die. I remember staying at a friend in Californiia for the week. On Friday afternoon when her husband came home with the groceries he also had a wrapped book from Barnes and Noble. She told me that in leu of flowers her husband buys her books. She is happy to have something to read on Shabbos and she also has a growing collection of wonderful books!

Another women I know is always hosting many guests, she loves to entertain! I've heard her say numerous times that she doesn't see the point in spending so much money on flowers, in the end they will be thrown away. I found Edible Arrangements to be the perfect solution! Its a tasty, fresh, and healthy way to send over flowers. They sell all types of arrangements, with chocolate covered strawberries ect. (I know there are certain branches in NY that are Certified Kosher.) So which floral arrangement do u prefer the classic flowers, the edible ones, or are you the type to enjoy a good book? My Baby's First Book!

After my daughter was born we got lots and lots of baby gifts. Some were cute, some were practical, and some were really special! (I will have more posts coming about the do's and don'ts of baby gifts.)

For now, I want to share an adorable gift I got from two close friends of mine. They sent a large hardcover book that was personalized for my daughter. The pages in this book are filled with beautiful illustrations and vibrant colors. The story is about fairies and each page spells out a letter from her name. My friends wrote a personalized message on the first page as well as her full name and date of birth. Each book is also autographed by the author.

I thought this was a great gift, because we all know how much kids love books and I cant wait to read my little girl a book about her name :)

Giving a DVD as a Gift to your Zaide... Yay or Nay?

I bet your first reaction, was NO WAY! (or something along those lines)
Well then, let me tell you about this very personal, very meaningful present that will be really treasured and cherished by your grandmother, grandfather, uncle, aunt, mother, father, sister, brother , or even husband or wife!

Let me start by saying that this gift is only available to some people and I will explain:

If you grew up in Crown Heights, like I did, you were part of the lucky ones who had the honor to see The Lubavitcher Rebbe, and be one of the millions of people who received Sunday Dollars.
Well my parents took us many times to wait on line for hours to receive these special dollars with blessing from the Rebbe. I have a few pictures and I have many dollars but I was a young child and my memory of those encounters consist of being pushed a little on line passed the Rebbe, with my mothers voice repeating in my head telling me to remember to say "אַ דאַנק" to the Rebbe. So when I learned about JEM's new project and that is was available to order a DVD online I quickly did. I followed their instructions and searched for my name (I also typed in certain dates like the sunday of my birthday because I was sure that my parents took me to the Rebbe the week of my birhtday) To watch that short clip and be able to preserve that memory is priceless. To have it on a DVD at home and be able to play it over and over is unbeleivable.

And that's when I started ordering more DVD's. First for my grandmother, then for my aunt, and this time when I ordered it for my Zaideh I was there when he opened his gift and popped it into his DVD player. I cannot begin to tell you how emotional he was. He was in total amazement, how we were able to bring that memory back to life! And it was actually very inspirational to hear his story of what brought him to NY and to the Rebbe on that particular Sunday of that year!

Sweet Bday Gift!

This is a sweet little birthday gift I put together for my youngest sister. She just turned 8 years old and has made it clear that she wants REAL makeup this year. Apparently, someone had gotten her a makeup set last year, but she was not too thrilled with the mirror, plastic lipstic, and nail polish combo. So with this in mind, I made a quick trip to the dollar store and Voila! With just a bit of pretty paraphernalia it was complete!
